Why you shouldn’t skip an MOT
Car-pooling, turning down the thermostat and reusing last year’s wrapping paper are all smart ways to save money. But when it comes to cutting costs on vehicle maintenance, some decisions are wiser than others.
You’d think every vehicle owner would see the value in regular servicing. But according to the RAC’s annual Report on Motoring, one in five UK drivers under the age of 44 decide to skip an MOT and rarely replace their tyres.
It means there could be up to 5.2 million vehicles on national roads that do not have a valid MOT certificate. Not only is this a danger to the vehicle owner, but it also jeopardises the safety of other road users who prioritise safety over saving.
Why it’s important to get an MOT
An MOT certifies your vehicle meets road safety and environmental standards. It’s a legal requirement in the UK which not only keeps you safer on the road, but also prevents hefty penalties of up to £1,000.
Every vehicle requires an annual MOT from the third anniversary of its registration onwards. The only exception to operate a vehicle without one would be driving:
- to or from somewhere for a repair
- to a pre-arranged MOT test.
If you’re not sure when your vehicle is due for an MOT, you can check the date on your previous MOT certificate, view your MOT history online or give our team a call. We’d be glad to help.
What’s checked during an MOT?
Most MOTs take an hour to complete. During which time, your technician will check:
- axles, wheels, tyres and suspension
- body, structure and attachments (doors, seats, exhaust)
- brakes
- brake fluid contamination
- brake pad warning lights
- daytime running lights
- diesel particulate filter (DPF)
- exhaust emissions
- fluid leaks
- fuel system
- horn
- lights, battery and electrical wiring
- number plates
- reversing lights
- seatbelts
- speedometer
- visibility (mirrors, windscreen, wipers)
